Fly Fishing in Sault Ste. Marie

The famous St. Mary's River Rapids is located in the heart of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - flowing between the twin cities bordering Canada and the United States.

Accessible only from the Canadian side, the rapids offer wadable, open river conditions that will challenge your angling savvy. The rapids represent a short stretch of the St. Mary's river which drains Lake Superior into Lake Huron. It's approximately 2/3 of a mile long by 1/4 of a mile wide flowing over a substance of bedrock (sandstone), boulder, rubble, gravel and sand. The rapids supports annual runs of Steelhead, Atlantic Salmon, Chinook and Pink Salmon as well as a resident population of Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout and Whitefish.

Just a short drive north of Sault Ste. Marie, a number of tributary rivers of Lake Superior offer quality spring Steelhead and fall Koho Salmon fishing. Numerous inland lakes and rivers support good populations of Lake Trout and Brook Trout. The East Goulais River and Garden River both have sections designated solely for fly fishing.
